We don't know who they are. We don't know where they came from.
But we do know they are...?

If I recall correctly, it was said that it was hidden in the code of Rebellion - you might have a better chance looking through the GameInfo folder (this is just a guess on my part).

The only evidence we have about their existence is that they are something of the Vasari's own making, have been chasing them for the past 10,000 years, drive the Vasari that see them insane, destroyed the Vasari Empire, what is on the Kultorask's underside (provided this is actually something and not just us seeing what we want to see), and that there is some other clue hidden somewhere in the .exe which apparently should only take about 7 minutes to find.

Anyways, the pic of the Kultorask's underside is this:

This can be interpreted a couple different ways that I can see.  The first is one that portrays a Vasari (white) and a chaser (blue) in which the Vasari appears to be alarmed as the chaser attempts to eat it.

The second option has a Vasari head (white) with the chaser (blue) where it appears that the chaser is some sort of infection that walks around in a decapitated Vasari head.  Alternatively, this could just be an image of a Vasari face (my personal view) and the "chaser" is just the lines that happen to be nearby to make the ship look cool.

When compared to the original Vasari head, it IMO makes this option more likely simply as it's a better resemblance.

I'd have to agree with the second picture shown by your reply. I read the manual- "...Crew was found driven mad with fear..." And It suggests that the Vasari crew found on that ship would HAVE to have been infected, bringing up the question- what is this enemy that infects them, driving them insane? or WHO? But then again, this question's ALREADY answered FOR us, right? On the case- "...An ancient empire running from a terror of it's own creation..." These two things suggest that not only did the Empire create it, but also signed the deal to their own doom. If this infection led to the insanity of the crew, and the second picture shows this, then my best guess would be that the Empire was trying to create some sort of living organism that ensures maximum loyalty to the Empire, but it went terribly wrong, leading to absolute failure, and thus, the destruction of the Empire from within. This could possibly be my best guess as to what it was that the Empire was running from, as well as what it MUST have been DESIGNED for. If you guys agree, then we might just have another enemy to await in the climax of this epic game series.
