Intro says Vasari left beacons behind and those beacons always went silent. How can a virus shutdown automatic beacons and spread in space without carriers?  Also the whole beacon idea isn't the wisest one, leave a path of beacons to trace you.

I can see how the virus could work and still silence the beacons. I imagine something similar to the show "Firefly" and the reapers. Virus itself makes the infected insane and incredibly violent, search parties scout and see the horror of their race and go insane themselves through Vasari PTSD (not exactly how it worked in Firefly, but somewhat similar). The beacons themselves being left behind makes sense, it leaves a trail, yes, but it also serves to warn them when it's time to go.

God I miss that show.... 

I like the mystery personally, nothing more terrifying than not knowing your enemy...at all.
